In general, how long does it take to get the patent after you have the application submitteed?

Im not sure. But still once you file your invention. You still can start your project, because your invention is now legally "PATENT PENDING", that means it gives you protection. BUT, it can be a risk.

Some novelty items in stores(like Hardware, and dollar stores) have cool stuff that say patent pending in the bottom of the item or package. well this information to prove im right.
