This tool was mainly designed to speed up the roof tear-off process and stop the impact on the wrists and elbows.
It can be used mainly on older homes that have a first layer of wood shake shingles with up to three or four layers of asphalt or fiberglass shingles over it, as long as you have the standard gaps between the boards as on this roof photo.

The
tool works by sliding the bottom prong under the shingles and between the
boards. In the same time, the top prong slides over the shingles, then when you
lift you can tear off a good foot of roofing together with most of the nails -
as demonstrated in the middle and bottom pictures, where I had torn-off one
layer of wood shake shingle and three layers of asphalt shingles all at once.
The wood shake shingle roofs make-up for about 90% of my business.
